Chair of the Founding Committee of the International Institute for Jewish Genealogy and Paul Jacobi Center. Author or co-author of seven resource genealogical books, including the Avotaynu Guide to Jewish Genealogy and the prize-winning Where Once We Walked. Directed major genealogical projects, such as the creation of a Holocaust-era assets database and the microfilming of confiscated Russian consular records held in the US National Archives. Founding president of Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington; chair or co-chair of seven Jewish genealogical conferences; member of advisory boards at the U.S. National Archives and Beth Hatefutsoth. Recipient of the IAJGS Lifetime Achievement Award (2000). With Gary Mokotoff, co-recipient of a one-time Body of Work Award from the Jewish Librarian’s Association for their joint role in developing and enriching the field of Jewish Genealogy.
